Lymph Drainage Therapy
What is our Lymphatic System?
A key part of our immune system, the first line of defense against illness and disease.
The strength of our lymphatic system depends upon our body’s ability to drain stagnant fluids and detoxify by filtering out toxins and foreign substances.
As lymph vessels drain excess fluid from our body tissues, this enables foreign materials to be delivered to the lymph nodes for assessment by immune system cells.
The lymph nodes are miniature filter systems of the body and can swell in response to being overloaded for example by bacteria, viruses, trauma, disease, and infection.
Why do I need Lymphatic Drainage Therapy?
To boost fluid flow and aid filtering and detoxification.
The lymphatic system can be compromised by infection, bacteria, viruses, surgery, burns, trauma, substantial swelling, fatigue, stress or aging if the body is not able to process the invasion of foreign substances optimally.
If the system is compromised by swelling or scarring, a repatterning of the lymph flow may be required.
What should I expect from a Lymphatic Drainage Treatment?
It is a one-hour, full body treatment. Clients are treated in loose comfortable clothing.
The drainage technique induces a deep state of relaxation.
Therapists are able to detect areas of restricted flow.
Several sessions may be needed to bring the lymphatic system to its optimal functioning.
What Conditions does Lymphatic Drainage Therapy help?
Toxicity.
Edema, swelling, lymphedema of many origins.
Relief of chronic inflammation, acne, eczema and allergies.
Immune system stimulation for preventative and therapeutic effects.
Regeneration of tissue.
Relief from chronic pain
Deep relaxation to aid depression, insomnia, stress, loss of vitality, loss of memory.
Antispastic actions to relieve conditions such as voluntary or involuntary hypertonus.
Chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia.
Alleviation of adiposis and cellulite tissue.
Lymphedema Therapy
Lymphedema is caused by damage to the lymphatic system, and means that the lymph flow is disrupted and protein cells accumulate in the tissues, bringing about swelling. Although there is no known cure for this, the swelling can be very successfully managed with Complete Decongestive Therapy, and a normal lifestyle can often be restored. This non-invasive, painless and effective therapy has been used in Europe since the 1960s, and is now widely recognized in the United States.
Using a combination of skin-care, manual lymph drainage, compression and a customized exercise program, swelling can recede dramatically. Compression Therapy improves the function of the muscle pumps, helps to reduce fibrotic tissue and promotes venous and lymphatic return. Following this, the improvement can be maintained by adhering to some simple guidelines.
10 Things to keep in mind before getting a Lymphatic Drainage Treatment:
There are many health benefits associated with lymphatic drainage massage, and booking yourself one right now would not be a bad idea at all. However, before you do that, make sure you keep the following things in mind:
1. Make Sure Your Therapist Has The Right Experience
Make sure you are making an appointment with a professional and experienced lymphatic drainage therapist. When you meet with a possible therapist, ask them about their training and experience in practice.
2. Stay Hydrated
It is also vital to drink plenty of water before receiving a lymphatic massage. This helps with the detoxification process. The procedure is likely to be less effective if you are not hydrated.
3. No big meals before the treatment!
Before your session, try to eat only small snacks or small portions. Also, a fast would be a good idea before your massage because a full stomach will make it more difficult to drain the toxins from your abdomen and the organs around that area.
4. Wear The Right Clothes
It is not necessary to undress for treatment. Loose comfortable clothes are fine. Drainage is more efficient with less clothing, and wrapping in a sheet is also an option.
5. Do Not Use Lotion Or Oil
The Lymphatic drainage massage calls for a skin-stretching motion to be effective. The massage does not require oils or creams, allowing the skin to stretch. It is recommended that you do not apply products that slow down friction prior to your treatment.
6. Make Sure Your Bladder Is Empty Before Your Treatment
The massage is focused on efficiently removing the stagnant fluid in your system. Therefore it is recommended that you empty your bladder before your treatment!
7. Hydrate Well After Your Treatment
This will help your body to process the toxins that have been moved during the treatment.
8. Rest Up
After your lymphatic massage, by the evening it is not uncommon to feel drained since getting the toxins out of your system can be tiring. Allow your body to rest.
9. Reschedule The Session If You’re Sick
Reschedule your appointment if you feel that you are coming down with a cold, flu, or Covid so as not to infect anyone, but ALSO you are likely to feel worse if you get drainage work at the beginning of an infection. Once the infection has passed, a drainage treatment will be very helpful for your recovery.
